A powerful combination of history and the supernatural

London 1575. Accused of a murder he did not commit, Nelan Michaels flees for his life. Trying to start over, he apprentices with a blacksmith and learns to work with fire. As time goes by, memories of his persecuted past begin to surface, and he finds himself in many adventures. Along the way, he discovers and hones rare and special powers.

Set in Elizabethan England, this powerful historical adventure will grab you and not let go. The supporting cast of characters is strong and includes Queen Elizabeth I’s favorite pirate, Francis Drake, and her Astrologer John Dee. The main character, Nelan, is easy to connect with. The author’s ability to combine fascinating history with the supernatural in a compelling way is proven once again. This book, the first of two in a series, is a personal, magical tour of the Elizabethan era. The action, characters, and history will keep the reader glued to the page. Highly recommend to all fans of historical fiction and the supernatural.

I received a free copy of this book via Zooloo’s Book Tours. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.

I think Justin is one of our most underrated writers, particularly of historical fiction. His name should be mentioned amongst the best but never is.
This new book, the start of a new series (duology?!) and as the cover suggests is set at sea.
One of my favourite things about Justin is his description, it puts you right in the scene, alongside the characters.
The story follows Nelan, as he escapes the Spanish Netherlands and settles in London. Unfortunately the persecution he seeks to escape follows him and he becomes a fugitive on the Golden Hind.
It's as much a coming of age story for England as it is for Nelan, who I loved. I do love a book where I read and learn something too. That's very much the case here, I loved learning more about the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
This was a really engrossing read, that I couldn't put down. I really enjoyed being immersed in that world and can't wait for part 2.

The Mark of the Salamander is book 1 in the Island of Angels series and the first book I've read by this author.

Being a big historical novels fan, this looked right up my street, and it certainly did not disappoint.

Without giving too much away, we follow our main Character, Nelan on this, his epic journey and coming of age story. Nelan has fled religious persecution in the Spanish Netherlands and ends up in England where he studies under Queen Elizabeth’s astrologer. He is then accused of murder and pressed into a ships crew, The Golden Hind, where on a voyage, he discovers powers that he must learn to understand and handle.

The author's obvious brilliant research really brings this world to life and his writing skills add another dimension which fills the Elizabethan world with rich atmosphere and vivid imagery.

The narrative is captivating and the pace just right, while the author's writing style blends seamlessly with this type of novel.

A big 4 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

This is the first book in The Island of Angels duology and what an amazing introduction.

This is actually the third of Justin's books that I've read now and I have honestly loved them all.

I've never been a huge history lover - but I have loved the combination of the historical facts that are interwoven with the stunning characters and fictional storyline.
The storyline is so captivating and the characters so relatable that I just can't help but become immersed in the book and at the same time, take in this new information - which now, I find totally fascinating.

Nelan Michaels finds himself in a fix. After fleeing the Netherlands to avoid religious persecution and settling in London, he now finds himself accused of murder and in need of escape once again.
Finding refuge on the Golden Hind, captained by Francis Drake, Nelan soon discovers that his journey in life is only just beginning.

Newland has a way of writing characters who just jump off the page and immediately embed themselves into your heart. Even those who are more morally grey.
Nelan was a great character to explore and I loved the way he developed over the course of this book. Not only a coming of age for him, but also as he tries to come to terms with and learn about the mark of the salamander and what it means for him.

The descriptive writing completely transports us to the era and creates a world that is bright and exciting. I often found that it was difficult to put this down and although a good sized novel, I couldn't believe how quickly I got to the end.

I think that Justin is one of my favourite historical fiction writers, as he brings to life a whole genre that I have so often avoided.

I can't wait to see and read part 2 of this series and continue Nelan's journey, but I'm also excited to see what else is coming from this author.

The Mark of The Salamander is the first in a duology which seeks to tell the secret history of England in the Elizabethan Era. Set in 1575 it follows Nelan Michaels who is a young Flemish man fleeing religious persecution in the Spanish Neverlands. He settles outside of London in Mortlake where he studies under John Dee, the Queen’s court astrologer. A bright future lays ahead of him until he is falsely accused of murder. Forced to become a fugitive, Nelan is pressured to join the crew of the Golden Hind. Thrust into a strange new world on board Francis Drake’s vessel, Nelan sets on a voyage of discovery in which he finds Mutiny, ancient tribes and hoards of treasure. But he also must explore and master his own mystical powers, including the Mark of the Salamander, the mysterious fire spirit.

Having focused on The English Renaissance and Elizabethan era for my Master’s degree I was more than excited to read this one. I would say it is a solid 4.5 stars which I have rounded up to 5 (mostly because of John Dee!). Newland merges history and fiction to create an interesting tale with a touch of magic and mysticism. The characters were well rounded and believable. I did find Nelan a tad annoying at points but in fairness he was delt a terrible hand in terms of fate and can perhaps be forgiven for his actions. I find that writing historical figures can sometimes be difficult, how do we really know what they were like beyond bits and pieces of surviving records or diaries? But Newland manages to bring them to life well and with respect, keeping them true to what we know from these documents etc. For Example John Dee and Francis Drake are true to the characters we believe they were (if that makes sense!) from the documents we have surviving by or about them.

Tied with the characters I found the writing enjoyable and easy to engage with. I did feel Newland does a good job of transporting is back in time with smells, sights and sounds. While on the Golden Hind you felt like you were on the ship with its close quarters etc. I am excited to see where the second book takes us and if Nelan gets his revenge. If you enjoy historical fiction that is written well and shows good research tied with a little bit of magic and mysticism you will love The Mark of the Salamander. I was biased because anything with John Dee is an instant win for me but thankfully this novel is more than worth the five star rating!

I’ve read many books by this author and loved them all, so I had great expectations for this book. It lived up to all of them. With the wonderful, vivid descriptions I was instantly transported to London 1575, where Nelan Michaels, a young Flemish man who has fled the Spanish persecution with his father is now flourishing. But events conspire against him, and when he’s accused of murder he’s forced to run, eventually ending up on Francis Drake’s the Golden Hind. From here on in, Nelan’s adventures had me traversing foreign and dangerous seas, coming into contact with mysterious and sometimes savage tribes, and the mysticism of superstitions, including the mark of the salamander he bears and his visions. There are some wonderful characters, including Big Nelan and Diego who help him grow from boy to man, and a couple I wished would come to a fitting end. I could feel the pain of Nelan’s losses but also his constant hope, the almost claustrophobic atmosphere of being on a ship for so long. The research gone into this book is astounding, bringing everything vividly to life, the drama, the danger and excitement of life on the seas.
As ever Justin Newland pulled me into another world and I’m now waiting with bated breath to discover more about Nelan’s life and what the Mark of the Salamander means for him in the future.

This book is not any easy read, I definately do not recommend it for beginner readers but it is one intriguing read, a page turner, once you are able to get accustomed to the writing style & the storyline.
I appreciate the extensive effort given to every small detail in the book. I especially liked reading through the author's note/ acknowledgements section about how and when he started the book and when he finished it & the surrounding story about it.
My favourite part of the story was, Nelan and Eleanor's love story and also the courage, that Nelan showed throughout. He faced challenges, fell and again stood up to face what life had to offer. The hell & heaven, when sailors return, some alive, some dead and some who donot return, was heartening to experience.
It is a beautifully written historical fiction story. I totally recommend it, if you are fond of this genre.

I have read the majority, if not all of this authors books. When I saw The Mark Of The Salamander was going on tour, I promptly accepted my invitation!

Justin Newland always writes novels that draw my attention. Every book I have read by him has plunged me back to historical eras that I find fascinating. This book is set in Elizabethan times and follows Nelan, a young Flemish man who has fled religious persecution in the Spanish Netherlands. He goes to England and ends up studying under Queen Elizabeth's court astrologer. He finds himself wrongly accused of murder and subsequently pressed into the crew of the Golden Hind. On this voyage he discovers mystical powers that he has to explore and master.

I was so caught up in Nelan's life that I devoured this novel. The historical research creates a rich and vivid read that sparks my imagination. Every character he writes is always brought to life with an intensity that sweeps me up and connects me to them.

The fact that Nelan is crewing on Francis Drake's ship, the Golden Hind was wonderful to read about. I always say I enjoy historical fiction because it educates and entertains me. Any novel I have read by this author does exactly that and much more. The research is always clearly evident and how he recreates history with his own remarkable fantastical elements is superb.

To say I sped through this novel is quite an understatment. I did wonder if I would be as captivated by The Mark Of The Salamander as I was with every other novel I have read by Justin Newland. All I can say is I was addicted to this one, the English history was such a highlight!
Thanks to Zooloos Book Tours and Justin Newland for the gifted copy of the book to write my honest review.

I read a lot of historical fiction books in the Tudor era but this was slightly different as it came from the point of view of a fleeing Dutch boy. It was interesting to read this story which involved the Spanish Inquisition and other elements I know less about. I was really routing for Nelan and enjoyed reading about his adventures. I would really recommend this to fellow historical fiction lovers and will be looking out for more by this author in the future!

The Mark of the Salamander
Rather than starting from the beginning I move to a revelation and heartfelt meaning of the title that the main character a young man named Nelan Michaels learns at the hand of someone else and the start of a life that will change you the reader and this young man in many ways. The title refers to three wavy lines on his hand and the meaning: SPIRITS OF FIRE hold true in the entire novel as we learn the meanings of the different ways to create fire, the importance of it and how it plays a strong role in Nelan’s life. Nelan at the start of the story faces off with a bully that taunts him and ridicules his way of life and his religious beliefs. A fire that this bully started and winds up dead is blamed on Nelan, but he did not do it. Throughout this powerful novel focused on class, religious persecution, prejudice against those that don’t follow the beliefs of others you will root, yell and scream at every turn as Nelan fights for his life.
Dr. Dee his mentor teaching him about life, astrology and much more reminds him of the gifts he has been given but just when he thinks he can get away the constables are at the door and his father blocks him from leaving stating he has to face his punishment and does not believe in his truths. Finding his way to start over and along the way is once again beaten and hurt, he meets Edward Mussel and he gets a role as his apprentice on his ship and then the blacksmith teaches him his trad and he becomes adapt at working and learning about fire and the power it has in many way.
Told in many voices and readers immersing the Renaissance in England and Nelan growing up as a Dutch Protestant finds out his ability as I with John Dee the queens astronomer, conjurer and mathematician as he grows to be a strong young man cleaning the Forge, learning how to stoke the fires and dealing with the rest of the crew and those who would try to take him down at every turn.
Nelan is smart and learned how to use metal and make doorhandles, and latches and deliver them but going out in the wild and public he fears getting caught, the weather impeding his journeys and hoping to find a home with this new mean and in and congregation but will he? With the Queen excommunicated and the gall of the Pope the author presents mani different sides as this is about religious persecution, different views on religions and which ones or one Baptist, Catholic or Protestant and those he deals with each have their own views and those that do not adhere the end results sometimes death. Staying aboard the Golden Hind and then leaving this ship and traveling and working for Sir. Francis Drake, Nelon becomes hardened to many hardships he will face the crew that could be unyielding and cruel, and one man named Nelan or Great Nelan and he is Little Nelan bond like a father and son in order to have someone on his side and feel some type of connection.
The time period is the Elizabethan time period where paranormal mystical elements and the spirt of the salamander appear at different times and the history of the Roman Empire, teachings of John Dee and a book that changes it al for Nelan The limits of the British Empire and in ancient times a Roman Empire allows the reader to experience each time period, each port , each journey and more the growth of Nelan and how at times he felt free, meeting Great Nelan, Diego , the many crew member and Sir Francis Drake and being blindsided when someone thinks he is the one who killed the young boy from his school as the author makes you wonder as you meet the boy’s family just what the hidden truth is and more. When he is again taken into capture and pleads and states he is innocent the paths change, the cells are different and in the end you won’t believe his final fate. Meeting the baker’s daughter Eleanor keeps him going and hoping that someday he will marry her. But Nelan’s fate is already created by the Gods you might say and his book focuses on change, the truth behind where Francis Drake was headed, the startling revelations of how he rewards Nelan, the crew and the gift from the Queen, and the many places they stop , fires, the wind the rain you feel like you are taking each step of the journey with him.
His conversations with Drake are different and you can feel the mutual respect forming between the two and the scenes with Great Nelan are my favorite as they each share their pasts, their dreams and his hope to find a life outside of a ship. Crossing the famous zone and then learning more about Doughty, Wynter and spoke briefly with Drake but in whispers that he hardly hears them be Nelan believed they had a shared collaboration and Master Chester, Thomas Moon and Thomas Fletcher and each with their own viewpoints. Heading for South American and Drake on his side for now the chapter Crossing the Line and Rite Of Baptism says it all as you go along on the journey and learn the true meaning of belonging that Nelan feels.
Island of Justice changes things for all that are on the ship and Nelan plus what happens to Diego and not allowing him to help save his life, lets you know the true meaning of friendship, understanding faith with Nelan but when tragedy hits and Great Nelan is gone he has to find a way back into the world he is given but first he has to remember and mourn the man that was like a father to him and more. Sr. John comes to light and his life is going to change as once more he is taken into custody, accused of the murder of the boy in his school but the author takes the scene and creates the voices of many and will someone believe him and will he finally get the justice for himself and the truth behind who killed Guillermo.
Lies, deceptions, betrayals and hope linger in this powerful novel dealing with religious persecution , families that think they are above the law, a young man who just wanted his true love and an author that lets you know that Nelan still has a long way to go and many more journeys to come.

In The Mark of the Salamander, we are thrown straight into the action, and the pace doesn't slow down.

We meet 17-year-old Nelan, the son of a Flemish immigrant who had to flee the Netherlands after the invasion by the Spanish. As Protestants, their lives were in danger under the new Spanish inquisition that punished their new subjects harshly.

Nelan is a small boy for his age, and thus easy prey for the more bolshy pupils at his school at Westminster. He's a quick learner, having studied maths and languages, but a fighter he is not. When he is bullied by the two sons of an important Spanish courtier at the court of Queen Elizabeth, he can't easily defend himself. But little did he know that the brothers' hatred would go as far as trying to kill him, through fire. Watching the inferno, Nelan his hit by a vision of a woman at a stake. Is it a memory or a nightmare? He doesn't know, and when he comes to, fingers point at him. The assassination attempt backfires, but Nelan ends up being blamed for the incident – and a resulting death.

When his neighbour, famous astronomer, mathematician, and adviser to the queen, John Dee – in whose work Nelan is very interested – warns him of his fate, he flees his home and delves into the bustling life in London, ending up as an apprentice to a blacksmith. There, he realises his fascination for fire. As a fire sign (Sagittarian), he recognises and admires its deadly force. But he fears it too. For the next couple of years, he is happy there, living with fire every day. And after he saves a family from a fire in their home, he is drafted into the local fire watch.

But when he attends a fire at his old home, he is being recognised and he ends up in gaol. Yet it seems his fate is not to end at the gallows when he finds himself abducted, and on board a vessel bound for England's south coast. With a little luck (or fate intervening?), he joins Francis Drake's new endeavour, and Nelan's real adventure is only about to begin...

After this breathtaking start to the novel, we follow Nelan's journey further, but I won't reveal any more. Just read the novel!

Nelan is your typical anti-hero. Not a swashbuckling man like Drake, but a boy looking for answers: What happened to his mother? Why can he see ghosts? What is the mark of the salamander? And why does he have this uncanny connection to fire?

As a fellow Sagittarian, I can well understand the latter. Ours is a fire sign, and if you believe in astronomy, you can see how planets influence life on earth, and behavioural patterns begin to emerge. Like Nelan, I love fire and find it soothing and scary at the same time. This is a fascinating part of this novel, which trails the influence and knowledge John Dee possessed at the time.

Nelan grows up during the course of the story, and I loved the way he's developing. He's first and foremost a nice lad trying to survive in a world full of dangers. One false word or action could see you persecuted – and if you're unfortunate, tortured in the many ways they practiced in those days. He's a survivor who, after Dee's pronouncement early on, firmly believes in his fate, and fate always looks out for him.

The research is impeccable, and Justin Newland creates a truly authentic image of life in the late 16th century, both in London and overseas. He doesn't shy away from portraying the grimier side, the poverty, dirt, ambition and greed. This adds a strong, realistic element to the setting.

The Mark of the Salamander is not airbrushed history. It's rough, unforgiving, and at times brutal, but also showing respect and recognition where it's earned. You won't want to stop reading, as the pace keeps you engaged in this riveting plot.

Some readers may not be keen on the paranormal elements in the novel, but I found they added a sense of there being 'something else' out there, fitting nicely into an era of discovery and learning.

The novel is told from Nelan's point of view, but there is some head-hopping at times, which can be a little confusing, but it never lasts long before we're back with our hero.

Gripping, fast-paced, and firmly set in its time, The Mark of the Salamander is an absorbing historical adventure that takes you to the High Seas during the reign of the most illustrious of the Tudors, Elizabeth. Highly recommended.

Young Nelan doesn’t have it easy. He’s a young man trying to live in a world of persecution. All he really wants to do is get an education but not everyone likes his kind.

Things quickly escalate and Nelan finds himself on the run for murder… but everything he did was simply to defend himself… Just no one will believe him… That is with the exception of Dr Dee..he knows there’s something about Nelan..he’s got a future to live for.

On the run without a family.. without funds and with only the clothes on his back he’s fortunate to find work and with any luck the love of a good woman too.

Alas the peace won’t last forever.

Nelan discovers he’s a way with fire like no one he’s ever seen, and he learns to respect it and it’s destructive power.

When people she his natural talent this leads him to a new job that will unfortunately take him closer to his past than he would have liked and this time there’s no escape.

Trust into one of the worst prisons possible Nelan quickly has to adapt and he’s smart.. he knows if he doesn’t get out soon then he never will.

For me this was when things really started to get interesting as he meets a group of sailors which leads him to a life on the water.

I’m never one for spoilers but seriously there’s so much going on in Nelan’s life.. the poor boy is just thrust from one dangerous situation to another.

Pacing wise the story flowed nicely, it’s an easy fast flowing read as the author doesn’t plough you with tonnes of information that’s not needed, it’s all about the setup and giving you interesting titbits.

In the authors style I really enjoyed the plot mixed with the spiritual side as Nelan discovers his powers and hopefully find his true purpose in life.

The book is very character driven with decent length chapters, this combination helped me quickly come to like Nelan and feel for him during the pain he must have suffered. Especially a dark secret he’s been hiding from himself, too young at the time some secrets have been buried but the fire will soon set those free.

Overall a cracking 4* read, lots to get to grips with, fast flowing exciting plot

"The Mark of the Salamander" by Justin Newland immerses readers in a thrilling Elizabethan adventure that unfolds against the backdrop of religious persecution and the burgeoning English exploration of the seas. The protagonist, Nelan Michaels, a young Flemish man seeking refuge from religious persecution in the Spanish Netherlands, finds himself thrust into an unexpected journey when wrongly accused of murder. Thrust into a strange new world on board Francis Drake’s vessel, Nelan must explore and master his own mystical powers – including the Mark of the Salamander, the mysterious spirit of fire.

Settling in Mortlake outside London, Nelan's aspirations take a dramatic turn as he studies under Queen Elizabeth's court astrologer. However, his dreams are shattered when he becomes a fugitive, compelled to join the crew of the renowned Golden Hind, captained by Francis Drake. This sets the stage for a maritime saga full of perilous encounters, mutiny, encounters with ancient tribes, and the pursuit of untold treasures.

What adds a unique dimension to the story is Nelan's discovery and mastery of mystical powers, particularly the enigmatic Mark of the Salamander—a manifestation of the spirit of fire. As Nelan sails the seas on the Golden Hind, the narrative weaves together historical events and mystical elements seamlessly, creating a tapestry of adventure and intrigue. The supporting cast of characters is strong and includes Queen Elizabeth I’s favorite pirate, Francis Drake, and her Astrologer John Dee.

The novel not only promises a gripping tale of survival and exploration but also delves into the secret history of England's coming of age during the Elizabethan era. The combination of historical accuracy and the infusion of mystical elements adds depth to the storytelling, making "The Mark of the Salamander" a compelling read for those fascinated by historical fiction with a touch of the supernatural. Justin Newland's work in this first installment of "The Island of Angels" series showcases a skillful blend of history and fantasy, promising an epic journey through uncharted waters and unexplored territories of both the world and the human spirit.

An exciting, magical adventure!

The Mark of the Salamander is the first book in author Justin Newland’s duology, The Island of Angels, and it is a wonderful, rousing, and magical adventure, set in the historic period of 1575-80, when Elizabeth I was queen and England is poised to expand into a mighty empire. With its engaging main character, vivid descriptions, and absorbing plot which deftly combines history with magic, the author has created a very special story and I was lost in its pages from start to finish.

Nelan Michaels is the hero of the story: a young Flemish boy who came to England with his father to escape religious persecution. A good boy, his bright future at university is derailed by the false accusation that he murdered a student at his school. Like a character out of a Dickens’ classic, Nelan faces obstacles at every turn and battered by fate, but he always succeeds in dragging himself back up to try and try again.

The author is a compelling storyteller, with a gift for marrying historical fact with fiction. His descriptions of life during this time are subtly full of fascinating details without ever feeling like I was reading a textbook; I was immediately immersed in Nelan’s life and surroundings. Nelan’s circumstances shift drastically during the story, from his middle-class beginnings to abject poverty, even imprisonment, and the author paints a complete picture of it all. Readers get a robust vision of life at all levels of society.

The story moves at a nimble pace throughout and I was so caught up in the story, I was compelled to read the entire book in one satisfying evening. Just when I thought things would settle down, and perhaps, I could take a break, some new situation would arise that I had to see resolved. Still, I think this might be a perfect read-aloud to share with family and younger readers, tantalizing all with cliffhanger stopping points.

I recommend THE MARK OF THE SALAMANDER to readers of historical fiction who would enjoy magical storyline.

Here’s my review of The Mark Of The Salamander

It took a few pages at the start for me to get into this book as the era is earlier than I usually read but once Nelan is accused of murder and he goes on the run, I get really interested in reading the book. The story becomes more alive and invigorated while we follow Nelan in his travels whilst he finds employment in London then going on Francis Drake’s ship, the Golden Hind and setting sail for the other side of the world. On his hand, he has a mysterious mark of three wavy lines like the salamanders, they sometimes show when fires are alight. He is trying to work out how to use them to his advantage. I found the book to be intriguing and it held my attention to the end. It must have taken some research to gather all of these facts and then sit and write them, no easy task I would assume, the author did a good job. It will be interesting to see what book two has in store for us.

📍The Mark of the Salamander by Justin Newland is the first book in The Island of Angels series: a two-book saga that tells the epic story and secret history of England’s coming of age during the Elizabethan era, Set's in England in 1575.

📌Nelan was a wanted man on the run. He had little experience of life, hardly any money, no skills and nowhere to rest
his head, and he faced an uncertain future. What was he going to do with the rest of his life? What had happened to him was so unjust.

📌Nelan was thrown into the world without any experience but soon he took over as apprentice with a blacksmith . During his journey he explore his own abilities and the powers he has.

......"I saw three wavy lines, like
lithe serpents, crawling around.”Dee raised an eyebrow beneath his black cap. “They’re salamanders. They are the spirits of fire.”.....

📌Author's way to depicts the complexities of Elizabethan era and the situation of Nelan is perfectly did the justice to this literary work.Nelan's journey throughout this book is  picturesque , adventurous, magical and perfect. This amalgamation of History and supernatural Elements is what makes the text standout for me.

Set in 1575, the plot revolves around the protagonist Nelan Michaels. His entire life takes a turn after being accused of Murder. Forced into a new world, Nelan travels the world in search of the act of discovery itself. Nelan must investigate and learn how to use his own magical abilities, such as the Mark of the Salamander, the enigmatic spirit of fire, in order to survive encounters with rebellion, ancient tribes, and heaps of wealth.

I love historical fantasy reads and this one's my New favourite.
Justin Newland invites us to an intriguing world. Right from the first chapter I was keenly invested, it took me some time to get assimilated with the intricately detailed premise, but it just blew my mind as plot progressed.
There's a lot of information, adventure, suspense, intrigue and action packed with incredibly good writing. What I liked about the story is it wasn't just about a fantasy, it was a story of Nelan's self discovery and coming out of him shell where he finds himswlf strong, fierce, and capable of being what he meant to be, where he stands up against everything that threatens him.
What made it a PAGE TURNER is the unanticipated direction author took this narrative, and that truly pay offs making it a delightfully twisty read.
So overall it was an awesome read. Can't wait for the second book!

The Mark of the Salamander: Book one in the Island of Angels duology by Justin Newland is a really epic saga of fantasy and adventure.
The story is set in the Elizabethan era , in England of 1575. Here, our protagonist, Nelan Michaels , a young Flemish man is working hard for his dream, studying under John Dee , the Queen's court astrologer. Then the story starts intensifying as he is accused of murder and has to run away to save his life. He finds himself aboard the 'Golden Hind' , Francis Drake's vessel and sets about on an adventure of a lifetime. He experiences mutiny of the crew, meets new tribes, finds new and wonderful secrets of the mystical world as he comes to terms with the Mark of Salamander.
The story progresses beautifully and the character growth of Nelan is described in well manner. The words are a bit difficult to understand but the tone of the Elizabethan era makes this more original and interesting experience of reading. The book is not very lengthy and the adventures keep the book interesting throughout.
The cover of the book is beautiful and gives a really adventurous vibe while indicating the voyage and mystery in a summarised way. The title is apt according to the story and the name of the series makes one want to read the book to unfold the mystery behind it.

The Mark of the Salamander written by Justin Newland. This book will come under the history fiction genre.

The book title is simple. The cover image was suitable for the story presented in the book.

As this is a new year I wanted to try something new in reading as well and that is why I have chosen this genre which is quite out of my box. The story presented in this book is set in the Elizabethan Era. The main protagonist of this story is Nelan Michaels and the whole story is ravishingly surrounding his character. His life was well and good until he was sent to the Golden Hind (the ship). While he was sailing he discovered various things, people, and even some magical powers. To know further more do read the book and discover the journey of him.

The story of the book is set in the year 1575 and the narration was so perfect for that time frame. Since it is a historical fiction genre the story moves at the same pace of speed, even though the story is intruding it will move slowly and steadily. Along with the classics, I can also find the great mystery in this story. The plot is very gripping and will make us read and finish the book soon. The only thing that I felt a little off in this story was at some places it felt overpowering narration and this made the reading experience a little down. The language is moderately easy for the extreme beginners.

I have previously read other books from talented author, Justin Newland and was excited to have the opportunity to read the start to his In the Island of Angels series, The Mark of the Salamander. I know I should not judge a book by its cover, but this one caught my eye right from the start. I was far from disappointed. It was an honor to take this journey with the main character, Nelan. I loved the vivid historical details that had transported back in time to Nelan’s time. I enjoyed taking this adventure and setting sail on Francis Drake’s Golden Hind. This is one that held my attention from page one until the very last page. I am not huge fantasy fan, but thought it worked well for Nelan’s story. Overall, I thought it was a fabulous read. Loved it!

The Mark of the Salamander will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading historical fiction that is full of intrigue and adventure during the Elizabethan era of England. I am eagerly awaiting to read the follow up of the In the Island of Angels series to find out what could possibly happen next and what Justin Newland has in store for his readers and fans.

I received a paperback copy of Justin Newland’s The Mark of the Salamander from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Justin Newland has a flair for writing astonishing stories and has mastered the art of marrying historical events with paranormal realm. He did not disappoint with the plot of The Mark of the Salamander which has all right combination of suspense, drama, tragic fall, and inspiring recovery.

I was flabbergasted with the character arc of Nelan Michaels and found his journey extremely fascinating and dramatic. He had ambitions of a bright future which came undone when he was accused of a murder. Nelan has been relentless in his pursuit for semblance and stability in life, escaping from the harrowing ordeals presenting itself. This characterization added to the appeal of the storyline wherein I was very involved with Nelan to understand what would he do next to save himself.

I enjoyed the analogy which came out between the tumultuous voyage encountered by Francis Drake’s vessel and the adventurous trials faced by Nelan on the vessel. The vessel and Nelan were fighting their own battles parallely and that came out beautifully in this story.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to all the history and supernatural enthusiasts for the interesting detailing of the past eras with a touch of thrill

Thank you @lovebookstours for the copy of The Mark of the Salamander by Justin Newland. If you love adventure and historical fiction with a touch of spookiness, this book is for you. This book captures what living in the Elizabethan era was like. I like how it was about the time period without being about Queen Elizabeth (although I love reading about her). I liked the nod to the supernatural and the characters from history like Sir Francis Drake. The book is well written and is a page turner as you want to know Nelan’s fate. I am looking forward to boon 2 in the series!
