Biography: Fran Lewis

Born in the South Bronx, I grew up with people from many ethnic backgrounds. I learned to play and work with children in my school that came from other countries and different places.
I was always over weight as a child and got picked on a lot by the other children in my class and even my teachers. I found it hard to do many of the sporting activities that my sister and cousins could do. I learned at an early age that kids can be mean and I promised myself that I would never retaliate or do mean things to other kids in return.

Tyneside seems to attract Agnes Lockwood but so does death seem to follow her path each time she is there. The first time she even assisted law enforcement solving a murder and actually using her critical thinking and reasoning skills to help solve the murder and bring the person to justice. But, what happens when she arrives again and comes face to face with a mutilated body? You got it! She becomes a witness, questioned and of course will once again use her sleuthing skills and curiosity to mix into the investigation much to the chagrin of her newfound boyfriend Alan Johnson.
Richard Harrison seems to be paying too much attention to Agnes and shows her a picture of a person that is supposedly her father and claims to be his. With someone named Joanne by his side Agnes thinks twice before letting him know that she does not believe a word she says. But, things escalate out of control as Detective Morris, once he is done being a wise guy, goes undercover to follow Harrison and his cohort and you won’t believe what is uncovered.
Agnes and Alan Johnson get closer but she becomes too involved in the case and manages to be in the wrong place at the wrong time too many times. Finding her at the scene of the crime puts her in danger. Seeing someone following makes her even more vulnerable and Morris is on her as a tail, but Sergeant Andrews helps with the final takedowns.
Encounters at breakfast, at times when she is shopping and at other times when going for a drink or walk, Harrison seems to be on her tail. Learning that he might be a scam artist with an accomplice who tries to wield unsuspecting people out of their money and businesses, Agnes realizes that he wants her to sign over Harrisons and anyone that knows her knows that will never happen.
A simple photo started it all off but first the body that Agnes found and then there are more mutilated bodies found and things get more dangerous as Agnes interferes in her own way. Smart, perceptive but at times impetuous she gets too involved in the cases and Alan begins to wonder if she should return home or check into another hotel. Richard Harrison seems too interested in her and although Morris is watching him and has become a decent detective, he can’t watch her 24/7. Evidence is found at the crime scene that takes the DCI and his sergeant to an exclusive jewelry show but its Morris who identifies the markings and where these pieces might have originated.
Scams happen all the time and this elusive woman named Joanne tries to convince Agnes that Richard might be her brother. But, something about her triggers a remembrance in her mind but where has she seen her before?
Author Eileen Thornton keeps the reader glued to the printed page and wondering just when the clues will be pieced together and if Agnes of the DCI or someone else will figure it out.
Things escalate even further as Agnes goes shopping but seems to be stalked by either Richard or his partner. Added in she spies him with another man and why does he look familiar?
The story that Joanne creates and wields for Agnes sounds convincing but will she believe what they have both created and the fictional biography of her father and family? As Alan and Andrews talk about the first body and if Agnes had been there when the killer dumped it would she have been next? Things get even more complicated as Agnes goes to have a glass of wine and Morris makes sure the glass falls in the floor and angers her. Why did he do that and why would she realize that something would have happened to her if he did not intervene? The jewelry storeowner implies that Alan is not smart enough to ask the right question or questions about the person who commissioned the pieces to be made. Paying cash was the first red flag. Second no address to deliver the items and only a phone number as a contact. What didn’t Alan ask? Why does the storeowner think he outsmarted him?
The Superintendent gets angry, nasty and accuses his detectives of not doing their job and even though they are quite skilled he feels they are novices. Alan defends them and know that he Chief Superintendent might ring him out but he’s not really concerned. Catching a deadly killer is his goal and using whatever limited resources he hopes will help him. But, within the story we get to know more about Alan and his feelings for Agnes but we have yet to learn if she will remain in Tyneside.
Taking the photo to someone that could tell if the picture was doctored since it is a police case and an ongoing one, I will not divulge what was found. Is Harrison a fraudster? Is he linked to the murders and if so how?
What did the lab technician find and is it enough to make an arrest? But, who is behind the murders and why is Agnes a prime target?
When the reason for the deaths are revealed and the tie in to Agnes is revealed and a past incident you won’t believe why someone wants her out of the way. Would she have had the same outcome if she never came to Tyneside? Did she arrive there too early? Did someone follow her travel arrangements? What happens when Agnes faces the killer and reveals a plot so heinous, do deadly that only author Eileen Thornton an award winning Just reviews/MJ magazine Women of the year, can deliver.
Will she face off with the killer? Will Alan save her in time? Will he realize who is behind the murders and why? What happens every time she comes to town? You guessed it none other than DEATH IN TYNESIDE! Watch out I’m sure there will be more! ...more "

What if you world was so fragile and breakable that all you see is what is right in front of you and not what is around you? What if you lived inside the shell an uncooked egg and each time you moved around just a little bit of the shell came apart and what you begin to see is not what others want you to see but what is really there? What if you could replay your life and rewind it or even fast- forward it to the end to see what your final days would be? How do you want to leave this world and what kind of legacy will help others remember you? Mathias Freese takes readers on a walk through his life as Thoreau walked through Walden Pond he takes us to Harvest, Alabama where he restarts his journey until he finds his path and where he will ultimately wind up. Questions there are so many and the author shares his open thoughts and his regrets, recriminations and his successes as we begin our walk with him and Thoreau.
As Walden shares his thoughts and reflections about living in a natural setting or surroundings, a simple life so does our author declare his personal declaration of independence in a raw, honest and bold manner of writing allowing readers to take the journey of discovery along with him. Walden went into the woods because he wanted to live deliberately, to “front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. The author relates that he went into the woods, as he states not out of ignorance, not as a seeker or from personal confusion. Thoreau knew the woods had no answers, maybe only better questions to ask. The woods were a testing of his self-awareness and states that he was not a blind man in search of a false cure.
Freese states that there was an extended time in his life that he did not register others and yet Thoreau did give readers his registered self. As he reflects upon his life he is still concerned with meaning. Thoreau he states did not want to live what was not life. He did not want to practice resignation. His book has three themes that come to light even in this one: Economy where he outlines a two-year, two-month stay at a cozy cottage in the woods near Walden Pond. Freese moves into this isolated area where there are few amenities available but like Thoreau all he needs was food, shelter, clothing and fuel. Simplified lifestyle for both men. Reading is the second theme that runs through Thoreau’s work and Freese’s too. They both talk the rewards of reading classical literature and yet he quotes other authors too. In the chapter titled Control we get a clearer perspective of this author as he explains while scribbling down his thoughts in an attempt to write a new book. He relates his fear of getting a stroke and the stress of the impending sale of his home in Nevada. At times he seems to stress out about things that he can actually do something about and stop worrying about it. He created list and hopes before he is gone to complete it. Like Thoreau he contemplates his existence and the sole consolation is an old as mankind itself: to find solace in a loved on which he finally does in his soon to be wife. Control is what keeps him centered and under control you might say. He relates why he needs control and explains: Control is a significant part of his character. Control: The need has been with him since he was placed, in a bassinet. When he leaves this world and gives up control will probably be as painful as the dying process itself. Sounds are the final theme in Thoreau’s work and sounds come to light within this one too. Both were always on the alert and looking always at what is to be seen. Using literature as their guide and as he relates the beauty of Harvest and the truth that can be found in nature. The rippling of water, the birds that find themselves outside his yard or in the woods, the music of nature is breathtaking and a comfort to his mind and soul. Solitude is another theme that both reflects and how at times they both feel and explain how it is to be alone, feel loneliness even when someone is there yet Freese relates his sadness at being estranged from his daughter and wanting to be closer to his son, Jordan. Family ties mean a lot but over the years they have been broken and he has tried to retie them but has failed when it comes to his daughter. Both authors relate the importance of solitude, contemplation and closeness to nature and each one seeking to meaning of existence. The theme of solitude comes through on page 27 when the states that is hard to go on, for writing is a lonely effort, perhaps as lonely as living in solitude in the woods. Thoreau he states had guts during the nightfall when he was twice alone in the darkness of his own self as in the outer darkness. Freese feels the unsaid, the feeling beneath the surface feeling. On page 31 he relates that he believes the artist is in a state of external giving to the world and when examining his motives or reasons as a teacher, psychotherapist, and writer, it all comes down to the massive lifetime donation. Self-reliance, Simplicity and Progress are brought out in both works as Thoreau refuses to need the companionship of others and Freese other than his wife and a few neighbors is isolated from human interaction too. Both note that it is important but neither search for it. Both want to simplicity of life and technology does not interest Freese nor does he own a Smart Phone or any other modern convenience except a computer to write and the Internet to do research and stay somewhat in touch with the world. Living in an area where the connections are not great at times he is totally isolated.
Writing I Truly Lament: Working Through the Holocaust was because of the many who resisted or denied that it happened. Writers create little worlds he states that we are the gods of these worlds. Writing has meaning and you have something to say but readers see things or see something else. Every reviewer sees the words and thoughts of an author in their own way and some relate the right meanings and dig down deep to understand the message being related while others stick to the surface structure and get the bare facts. He writes to express his passionate feeling about many things.
Both authors deal with debts in their own way as he states as in the Thoreauvian fashion should he detail the costs of moving into his hut but he itemizes it for the reader in detail in the chapter titled Inventory. He hopes to reconcile with his daughter as he relates his feelings for being estranged from her on page 79.
The chapter about Jordan was compelling as he finally introduces him to his wife and their relationship might not be on a smooth surface but at least he came for a while. I really loved the chapter Dive and Delve and his references to Darwin, Rosebud and Freud. Charles Foster Kane whispers Rosebud in the movie Citizen Kane a classic on his deathbed and the author states that he grasps its gravitas better now at 76. The sled had so much meaning for him, condensed meaning, the condensation symbols were experience in many dreams he says like archaeological layers. He expands on this reflection in the remainder of the chapter. The Three Touchstones really sums it up as the first he states involves a mentor of his whom he holds in high esteem and considers the most intelligent or smartest man he ever met. He explains it on page 99 the final paragraph. The second touchtone was a comment his mentor made to someone who asked how she could access me, as she found it difficult. The response was quite interesting as he said: Matt needs to be felt. Matt never made his own acquaintance and seems as the memoir comes to a close that without his wife, Nina, he might not have anyone around to give him a huge hug.
The final touchtone happened in 1970 when he was dating Rochelle and a tie. I’ll leave that to you the reader to learn why she said that the tie was beautiful and how he dealt with it. The ending of this chapter focuses on Mr. O. his therapist who seemed disjointed, unfeeling, disinterested and did not conduct a client-centered session. A real walk focuses on more references to Thoreau, others who have read him and their impressions. But, someone invented a game to coincide with Thoreau’s 200 birthday so maybe more teens and adults would be inspired to learn more about him and see how high up in the levels they would go. Part II focuses on his feelings about his new home and he describes it so vividly you would think he and Henry were there walking together. Anxiety, dread, fear, angst, denial of death on vividly on his mind all the time and concludes by telling Henry that when reading Walden he sees signposts that he built or erected for the astray and lost. At times Mathias still seems to be trying to find himself, where he wants to go and what he wants to do before he leaves this world. Mathias you cannot as you state on the last page do anything about your mortality but you can live each moment, enjoy your precious Nina, writing your outstanding books, keep readers challenged and definitely keep talking, keep walking and do not worry about thinking or feeling not yet since you have to write and share with the world way before you finally say: AND THEN I AM GONE.

When a young elephant is born into a tribe and the celebrations have been completed the mother is responsible to teach the child survival skills. As the mother rejoices and names her new born child Thunder she begins teaching him as other mothers do how to communicate with his tribe, how to understand danger and what happens when you find yourself in trouble. Thunder is smart and enjoys playing with the other elephants in his tribe especially Serenity. As he grows and the others do too they develop a daily routine, learn how to swim, play and enjoy the forest but also learn the dangers of what happens when some do not value the lives of these animals and use it for ill gotten gains.

When a bounty hunter sees Thunder and several other elephants he sets his site on him hoping to sell him to the highest bidder but not before he seeks them out, watches them closely and eventually captures and kills some of these precious and endangered animals. Along comes a special friend as Thunder realizes that he has lost his way when all of a sudden he tries to communicate with his tribe and no one answers. Captured and enclosed as if in a prison cell he becomes afraid yet drugged and tired as does his new friend Penelope the Parrot who provides laughter, humor and ribbing within the short time we get to know her before things begin to change. But, somehow the truck falters and he and Penelope are freed but how is he going to find his heard and return to the safety and warmth of his mother? From the moment you enter his world, see the amazing illustrations that bring the story to light you fall in love with Thunder and all of the interesting and unusual friends he makes along the way.

Soma the brazen and absolutely enchanting Rhino, the three egrets, the bats who provide an illuminating look at the world from a different view, Thunder who is learning the true meaning of friendship, understanding, loyalty and faith from a group of animals who are so diverse and different and who are looking out for each other in a special and rare way until the poachers try and take back what they lost. Will they recapture Thunder and Penelope? Will they go after the rest of the animals that are with them?

Meet Haru the bat, Riley the Rhino, Leopold the Leopard and so many animals that will help teach Thunder about the dangers of man and why the balance of the earth and the world was changed. As Riley explains that man is out to destroy the animals, take away their homes he does not quite understand at first but when they start to travel to a village, see the huge herd of elephants stampeding and destroy the land, the property and the landscape things start to frighten him as he thinks its his herd that is disappearing once again. Drago is not far behind as he delivers a message about a huge herd delivery to his boss, receives quite a bit of cash but what happens next allows readers younger and older to know that sometimes someone does things for greed and power while another named Mosi takes matters into his own hands thinking it will solve his problems and help him get money to feed his family. Although he is not for killing the animals or hunting them down something in him snaps and listening to Drago brag about what money can buy what will he do when he takes up the gun Drago was holding and rides off with it with a new purpose in mind?
When Drago recaptures Penelope and Thunder is in danger, with Soma tied up what happens next is right out of a movie with the egrets poking at Drago and making sure that he does not kill anyone one of them but not everyone will survive. But, something would change it all as a group of elder elephants find Thunder and want him to follow them home but not before we meet another of my favorite characters Fredrick the Flamingo who is fashion oriented, makeup savvy and definitely quite flamboyant as he tries to remake Thunder and the others in order to hide them from the uprights. But, his plan at first backfires but I bet you will never guess what he does with spandex yoga pants, an elephant and a Rhino to get to the other side. Drago was hacking away with his blades and definitely would not give up until he get Thunder in his clutches. Watch how they all play in the water, Thunder thinking about his journey and thinking about the uprights or us humans with their weapons and hearing the thunder like sound in the forest making him wonder if his name was as destructive as the fire that burst from the guns that looked like lightning in a darkened sky.
Close your eyes and picture hippo dancing, a long-tailed pangolin shaking ha long stick next to an egret with his body covered in small scales. Thunder could feel the music all over him and then watching the hippos circle him must have been quite a sight as Persius, Cedric and Sydney wondered and were in awe. Soma was a great character who loved Thunder and as Riley on page 93 explains the Great Spirit and how man became possessed or obsessed with material things. Will man ever walk with animals or beasts again? Will they continue to hunt endangered animals?
While the Flamingo wanted to see how her pupils fared Soma and Thunder out of breath eating red berries would hope to finally find their way to safety but not before Penelope is taken again. Wondering where she is they cannot imagine that she just left but they never realized she was being held captive again by Drago. The heard once again disappeared, the egrets, Soma and the others would support Thunder but he wanted to find Penelope. When a little girl is in danger for wandering away from her family and home will Thunder risk it all and the hunter’s gun to save this child, prove that the animals will not hurt any uprights or anyone else and help to create harmony in the rainforest? As the others tell him to leave, find his herd and not to risk it all, he along with Soma who is now tangled and needs to be free hope to save Imani before Mosi, her father pulls the trigger. The raging water, the current and three amazing elephants and one Thunder and you won’t believe what happens and you won’t believe what Mosi does that will startle and surprise readers with a twist you won’t expect.

When the final outcome arrives one member of the team will not survive while the others will have to decide where home is and with who. Will Thunder find his herd? When he arrives back where they were before what he sees is totally devastation, homes Will he find Serenity his mother? Will he remain with the other elephants? Meet fashion flamboyant Frederick, adorable a lovable Persius, Cedric and Sydney plus the sweet and loyal Penelope and enter the rainforest, take the journey along with them and our Thunder and find out if the earth will ever move again. If the sound of his feet moving to hope to communicate with his tribe will ever be answered again and will the uprights ever learn to live in peace and harmony so the with the animals so that the Great Spirit will shine down on all of us and them? Open your eyes and look at the view of the rainforest and hear the birds chirping, the two gorillas Harold and Neville observing the action from a hilltop and listen carefully when the sounds stop, the air is still and the only sound you hope to hear is that of Thunder. Authors Erik Daniel Shein and L.M. Reker provide many lessons for both adults and young children to learn with issues of understanding, the environment, the need to protect endangered animals, friendships, understanding differences, learning about other animals and their survival skills and hoping that Thunder and his friends can teach us Uprights that everyone needs to find their own place of safety on earth and we need to share it as one in peace.
The illustrations are amazing as you get to meet, Thunder, the egrets, Soma and of course our Flamingo in black and white and hopefully they will have more adventures in the future. Added at the end the authors add in Appendix I which enlightens readers to the threat to the elephant population and Appendix II which focuses on organizations that are working to protect and support the elephant and other endangered animals that need protection within Sanctuaries and more. This is a great book that can foster research by older children into endangered animals and other species and looking into each of the organizations listed hoping to learn more.
