Some Kind of Truth

Rate this book
Pittsburgh crime reporter, Steve James, returns home to find a mysterious package waiting outside his apartment door. At first, Steve fears the package could contain a deadly threat from a local mob boss pressuring him to retract his story, which helped put him behind bars. Instead, Steve finds a junior driver’s license belonging to Rebecca Ann Turner, a teenager who went missing from a party twenty-five years ago, and a USB flash drive containing a video of her murder.

Horrified by the contents inside the package, Steve is determined to find out what happened to Rebecca and why someone dragged him into uncovering this mystery. But as Steve sifts through the clues and weaves his way around those trying to prevent him from exposing the truth, he continues to struggle with personal issues stemming from his time as a war correspondent in Afghanistan, where he was filmed being tortured and nearly executed by the Taliban, making what happened to Rebecca all the more personal.

One day, reporter Steve James receives a special package containing a driver’s license and a USB stick. The only thing written on the USB stick is - PLAY ME!
From this moment on, everything changes for Steve. The cold case of Rebecca Turner takes him out of Pittsburgh and down into the depths of some shady people in these small towns.

‘Armed’ with cigarettes and his ‘best friend’ Jameson, Steve sets off for Abbottstown & Hanover, Pennsylvania. He wants to learn more about Rebecca and her case. He is assisted by the young reporter Amy Richards, a local.

The author wrote very fluidly and there were several surprises and twists in the book that occurred unexpectedly and yet were plausibly explained.

In general, the book was very interesting and I liked how vividly and in detail Smith described everything. I also liked the (few) more romantic moments and thoughts of the protagonist, they were well written and not too much.
(The author’s writing style is awesome. He manages to captivate readers with his lively and detailed description of characters and environments. I found his ability to build and maintain tension very pleasant. The author has a unique style that is both sophisticated and accessible, making the book a gripping reading experience.)

The main character, Steve James, sometimes irritated me, but at the same time I found him quite charismatic. Apart from his bad habits, he was a good guy.

His colleague on site, Amy, well… she was relatively interesting, even though she sometimes treated him like an errand boy. This was of course partly due to the fact that Steve had rolled up the story anew and wanted to take the lead.

All the other characters in the book… whether smaller or larger, were well written and authentic.

I especially liked the ending and I thank the Author for the twist on the last few pages!
Honestly, I had already guessed some of the elements of this story… but I was still pleased when I noticed towards the end that 'this one, important factor' was exactly as I had imagined it.

Even if I write a bit cryptically at this point, it is only to avoid any Spoilers.
I want you dear reader to enjoy this after all, as much as I did.

All in all, an unexpectedly excellent book. I gladly give this 9.6/10 points and round it up here on Goodreads to give it 5 stars.

Steve James never thought that monsters would once again enter his life. He thought his capture and torture by the Taliban while working as a war correspondent in Afghanistan gave him a get out of jail free card from all that. But when he finds a package left at his door containing a drivers license and a USB drive with images of a teenage girl who’d been missing for twenty five years, he must once again go on the hunt. It’s more than just a story to him.

Do you believe in monsters? You should. They’re real. They might be someone you know. Or someone you pass on the street. They look human. They act human. But it’s a glamour they wear so you won’t see the ugliness that is them. Yes, they’re homo sapiens. But they have no right to be called human. I’m a tough cookie. Don’t normally feel sick to my stomach when reading about these kind of monsters. But, the author’s writing wouldn’t let me look away. And knowing monster’s like the ones in this book are real. Are doing horrific things to people and still getting a good night sleep had a strong effect on me.

Steve, along with Amy, a young reporter, dive into the fray. They’re the unsung heroes. They’re the kind of people who hear a gunshot and run towards it while everyone else runs away. What they discover while investigating Rebecca’s disappearance should have made them run away. But, they entered the fray and faced plenty of danger. Unable to quit, even knowing they might not survive the case. I feared for them. I cheered for them. I cared for them.

There was no sugar coating of events in the story. The author put it all out there. Yes, I felt sick sometimes. But that made me eager to see how it all came together. Whether the monsters got their just desserts. And whether the characters I cared about were still alive when the dust settled.

A dark, disturbing story written just the way it should have been.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

Some kind of truth
Lies, truths , betrayals and hidden secrets are wrapped in a solid box hoping to remain hidden forever. A package left outside of his apartment will set up a mystery and desire to learn more than who sent it but will uncover a despicable murder that will haunt and prey on the mind and soul of crime reporter Steven James long after the clues and the guilty are uncovered. A box with a flash drive and a drivers license sets the stage for much more as he needs to uncover the reason he received this package, what was in the flash drive and who was Rebecca Turner and why was he chosen to solve her murder that was 26 years ago. What happened to her, she is still considered missing and as the clues come slowly and his editor T first rebuffs his reasons to pursue it and more, he’s reminded of a story and mob boss that keeps threatening from prison but Steven James will never back off and as the story unveils you won’t believe the harsh reality and some kind of truth that is revealed.
An article in a paper brings Rebecca’s story in the limelight and Steve decides to call the reporter. Amy Richards to learn more. A part with a friend. different takes on where why she left and how she vanished are all part of the speculation surrounding her disappearance and body never found. Amy from Hanover and Steve from Pittsburg leaves you wonderingly how they will blend and share ideas but Steve had nightmares of his own and when he viewed the video in the flash drive those nightmares resurfaced and his life was now on a thin string hoping it won’t fray or disintegrate.
As he begins his alliance with Amy they explore many avenues and the flash drive sends them to interview Dennis Turner , Rebecca’s father who discloses information about her that makes you wonder why anyone would hurt her but when the meet Wendy her friend and Amy talks about her take on her you realize that there are hidden lies and deceptions that have yet to be uncovered as Amy sets up an interview with the wife of Martin Green and what Steve does when checking his photos leads him to take a closer look at his car vs Rebecca’s and the Hoopers where the revelation will shock you and his incredible scrutiny of certain variables in the cars mesh and blend but one ties together. Let’s not forget the story about the monster and the thugs sent to threaten him. Steve is relentless and watch how it gets pieced together. Watching the video of Martin’s murder the startling truth comes glaring in Steve’s face and you begin to suspect why he’s involved and where the sheriff and Amy’s loyalty lies. Added in we view the place in a video where the murder of Rebecca took place and then Hoopers video as Steve moves ahead to connect the three murders and then hopes to unravel the truth. What about Greens shop was he murdered because of the video? What about martins email to a fake email address and answered?
A simple picture and a flash drive would alert Steve where all three were killed and seeing it in person as only misery and death were welcome inside the walls where it all happened. Pages 185-195 vividly depicted the truths and more.
The remainder of their time at the farmhouse and why they realized was understandable and allowed the harsh truths about who defiled Rebecca and two of the three responsible and one more to discover.
An altercation that created more injuring fear as Amy and Steve battle a masked man for their lives snd then see something in a bag that trickers a response that sends them back to where it all began, the party and Wendy who insisted Rebecca attend but the underlying truth about why and what really happened is locked inside of her fearing her life in danger but it’s far from over yet when the harsh reality sets in about why Martin and Kim were killed but where is the third?
Then a trip to learn more about the third and a threatening phone call and the reasons why certain victims were chosen as Steve will not believe the final betrayal, who killed the Martin and Kim and who was the last to be disposed of and how and why? A look into the eyes of the killers and a harsh reminder that trust comes with a failing and deceitful price as author Westley Smith drives the final nails home in more than one person and who and why will bring us to the terrifying ending where Steve learns that exposing the truth was a double edged sword and as it states can cut in both ways.ways to i learn the meaning of some kind of truth-and join the investigation and follow Steve and Amy and look up at the victim and decide if Steve will ever be the same and the fate of his story. Hope there’s more about Steve in another novel to complete the story and get justice . The justice comes from an unexpected source.

This book was a blend of crime fiction and horror. I cannot imagine how horrible it would be to: first discover so many missing girls, second that if they were easily forgotten no one looked for these missing girls and third they ended up being part of something they had no idea would be so horrible. I appreciate that this author kept things precise and to the point. There were no flowery words or beautiful descriptions just the plain truth of what was happening. It is such a shame that these type of crimes can remain hidden for years. Knowing how many people can be involved or connected is mind boggling. Some say revenge is not the way to go but sometimes maybe that is the only way to get rid of monsters.

For the first few chapters, I thought the writing was a bit too descriptive. I thought I wouldn't like reading the book, but I was surprised to enjoy the rest and the twists at the end, I really didn't see coming ! It was gore at times, horrible to think that men like these really do exist in the real world.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3.5-4 stars!

Steve James is a crime reporter based in Pittsburgh who is thrust into this 25 year old case about a teenage girl, Rebecca Turner, who went missing after a party one night. He teams up with another reporter named Amy from Hanover, PA, where Rebecca went missing, to figure out what exactly happened the night she disappeared. Steve was anonymously sent a USB with a video of Rebecca’s rape and torture, which dredges up old nightmares of his own recorded torture when he was in Afghanistan.

I enjoyed this book a lot! The author really thought the plot out well. Some of the scenes in the book were so nerve wracking and had my heart rate up! This book is full of mystery, a little bit of romance, and sooooo much suspense. I also really liked how descriptive he was! I really could imagine every scene playing out.

Right off the bat, Steve is very passionate about solving this case and getting justice for Rebecca while also working through his own demons, which leaves him kind of blind to the fact that he sometimes misses putting moderately important details together. Steve is a smart guy, but the very obvious clues he couldn’t connect the dots to made me absolutely insane.

There’s also this other storyline of Steve having dirt on this mob boss, and this guy is sending his goons after Steve and threatening him. After finishing the book, I see the connection and how it was integral to the plot, but up until practically the end, it seemed pointless. I wish it could have been tied in a little bit more than it was.

There also were a few typos I noticed, but they weren’t major and really had no impact on the book itself. Another dislike I had about the writing was that the author tended to repeat himself when he didn’t need to. Also, the romance subplot though had me rolling my eyes. Steve had a very high hero complex that just turned me off so much so that I could’ve completely done without the romance.

Overall, I did enjoy this book! It was kind of predictable, right up until the very end that is - that major plot twist really had me! Which is why I rounded up my 3.5 stars to 4.

Thank you to NetGalley and Wicked House Publishing for sending me this ARC in exchange for my review!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

In this novel Steve James, a Pittsburgh investigative reporter, is haunted by memories of his own past torture, when he receives a very unwelcome package in the mail. This package holds another nightmare to add to his personal collection, a video that shows the detailed torture of a teenager who went missing decades ago.

Steve wants to hold back this evidence from the police while he attempts to unravel what he can from this horrific movie. Reluctantly, Steve's boss, gives him a deadline of 72 hours to do so.

There is an additional equally compelling storyline in this novel, as Steve attempts to stand up to mob threats as he prepares to testify against them in a court case.

There is even a touch of romance in this story... It isn't ALL grim, despite it's primary subject.

Although this is told from a reporter's point-of-view, it reads more like a PI novel, or a police procedural, as James is definitely investigating a crime.

If this plot sounds interesting, do not hesitate to buy a copy of this well-written, addictive, compelling book.

I am always thrilled to discover (and write a positive review for) yet another great mystery author, and Wesley Smith fits that description.

By the way, half way through this novel I was SURE I knew who was behind the murders, but in the end I was fooled!

Trigger warning: Detailed rape and torture is depicted in this story.

I love a good mystery y’all and this one was about a mysterious package to start us off as readers. I love packages in general so I knew I wanted to read this book right away! This is the story of Steve James a crime reporter who also was a war reporter in Afghanistan who was tortured and beaten over there. In the package is a mystery that Steve needs to solve on his own behalf and someone else’s!
I love that the box had hardly anything in it that explained why it was sent to Steve or what it was about, but Steve was pretty spot on with what the thing in the box entailed. And he decides not to go to the police, I mean I can see why he wouldn’t after reading that first chapter. He shares what he saw with his boss and the rest of the story is a whirlwind of mystery and trying to figure out who done it! I really enjoyed the writing style of this author and Steve the MC, resonated with me as a character, because if someone sent me something like he got I would have to find out what happened to that person.
The writing is very good for a mystery novel and I had not read this particular author before. He is new to me, but I really enjoyed the read overall. He did an excellent job in engaging the readers in a mystery and trying to figure out who did it and what happened and in wrapping up Steve's story for this book. I would love to read more of this authors work in the future!

My first ever @netgalley book and it was a 4 star read for me! Thank you @wicked_house_publishing for sending me this book from Westley Smith to read and review. Let’s get into it…
This story takes place in southern PA. Being from PA, I appreciated the multiple references to Hanover. However, even had I not been familiar with the area, the author did a fabulous job of making the reader “see” the community and what was going on. The story follows an established crime reporter on the story of a lifetime- a 25 year old cold case in which a missing girl is gone without a trace - until her license and a video of her torture surface. The book takes the reader on this chase for truth and justice where you cannot be sure who you can trust. Story is compelling and I could not put it down and the plot twist? Didn’t see it coming. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ highly recommend grabbing this when it is released on February 2, 2024!

A gripping, dark, and frightening thriller!

Some Kind of Truth is a gripping new thriller by author Westley Smith that kept me fully engaged from start to finish. With its damaged but determined to get to the truth main character and compelling plot involving unthinkable crimes against a young teenage girl, I was driven to keep reading to discover what was going on and see if justice would be served for the victims.

Steve James, a victim himself in the past, is chosen by persons unknown to get involved in a 25-year-old missing person's case when he finds a mysterious package waiting outside his apartment door, which contains shocking information never seen before. The missing girl had lived in a small town hours away from Pittsburgh where Steve works for a major newspaper. He immediately, and periodically thereafter, questions why he was pinpointed as the package's recipient. As the paper's top crime reporter, his investment in the case is guaranteed once he examines the box's contents.

Steve suffers from the memories and trauma of his past and self-medicates with copious amounts of Jameson's, feeling the need for a drink every waking moment. However, he can still control acting on his needs most of the time and retains his edge as a skilled investigative reporter. He's joined in his quest for answers by a local small-town reporter, Amy Richards, and the two deal well together as they follow the clues.

The author has great storytelling skills, and I was completely drawn into the book, lost in the story, and oblivious to how much time had passed while reading. I was reluctant to leave the story behind when everyday life eventually demanded my attention. The descriptions of secondary characters and settings were vivid and realistic, fueling my absorption with the story. Although Steve spends some time debating his initial moves, there are few pauses in the action, and a couple of more recent murders are discovered to have some possible similarities to the cold case. As the case progresses, the plot has additional twists, including a real eleventh-hour surprise. There are clues in the narrative for sharp-witted armchair detectives to find or not.

I recommend SOME KIND OF TRUTH to readers of grittier mysteries, thrillers, and crime fiction.

Crime journalist Steve James finds a package on his doorstep containing an old driver’s license and a flash drive. When he views the contents of the flash drive, he is shocked to witness the brutal rape and torture of a young woman who appears to match the photograph on the ID. Upon further investigation, he discovers the victim has been missing for nearly 25 years from a small town a few hours away. That leaves several unanswered questions… What happened to young Rebecca? Who left Steve the package? Does this have anything to do with the recent expose he wrote that incriminated a local mob boss? And why does the on-camera torture seem to connect with what the Taliban did to him?

With the reluctant blessing of his editor, he heads to the town where Rebecca was last seen. Teaming up with another local reporter, they begin interviewing anyone connected to the case and scouring the area for clues, despite the case being cold for decades. This is where I got a little annoyed. As Steve and Amy make important discoveries regarding Rebecca’s disappearance, they tamper with evidence and contaminate crime scenes. There were so many times I wanted to shout at them to call the police and let them handle the situation. But they continue to sleuth, breaking the law and putting themselves in grave danger.

I thought the twist at the end was well done, because who doesn’t appreciate some vigilante justice!? But there were a few things that annoyed me. Sure, I understand Steve had his own trauma to deal with, but the constant dialogue between his brain and his desperate need for booze and nicotine was overdone. There were a few sections of the book that could have used a thesaurus, or at least better editing. Otherwise, it was a decent mystery, and I didn’t find it too graphic despite the author’s warnings.

I received this book as a gift.
Steve James is a rough-around-the-edges reporter who is quite realistic in his thoughts about himself. He likes to smoke and he likes to drink, maybe a bit too much. Two traits which bring to mind a fellow sitting behind a desk, cigarette hanging from his lips, glass of whiskey off to the side, mulling over some of his notes to compose a concise, yet truthful story. Yeah, I like Mr. James … I like Mr. James a lot. He’s real. He also has a quest, as a reporter, to find the truth. Such is the case when he received an unexpected package with some unexpected items inside which led him to find out what really happened to Rebecca.
This quest for truth led him to work with another reporter, Amy.
The story of Rebecca led both Steve and Amy down a very dark road.
I enjoyed this tale in all of its rawness, its darkness, if you will; the scenes described, while a bit on the ‘too realistic’ side for some readers, made it all the more real. One scene in particular made me squint my eyes.
What I really liked about this book … I was able to see in my mind’s eye the scenes described. That usually doesn’t happen for me, but it did with this one because of the way in which the author used words to convey even the most horrid of scenes.
I liked the way the author was able to give the characters personalities that I could relate to. This is one of those books that may stay with me for a minute or two simply because of the writing style, the way the author was able to capture those scenes with just words alone. That’s an art form that I appreciate.
Side Note: I’ve been recommending this book a lot.

Some Kind of Truth by Westly Smith is an unforgettable novel that will captivate you with its raw and gritty narrative and powerful imagery that I promise will stir up strong emotions in readers. The author skillfully litters breadcrumbs throughout the story, keeping readers hooked. Even with some violent and gruesome scenes, putting down this book proved very difficult. The shocking ending ties all loose ends together, and looking back everything that happened made perfect sense.

In my review, spoilers will not be revealed to make sure potential readers have a powerful experience. However, I will share some key themes including secret packages, USB flash drives, kidnappings, torture, murder, lies, betrayals, a spooky old farmhouse, nightmares, and encounters with reporters, police, and the mafia.

The main character Steve James, has had a turbulent life history, making him a character that lingers in the reader's memory for a long time. Certain chapters may be harder to digest, and I caution readers not to read this book at night like I did because certain chilling scenes will linger in your mind. Nightmares anyone?

Some Kind of Truth is a thrilling blend of murder mystery and horror, taking readers through a dark journey seeking justice, and redemption while pushing limits of moral integrity and facing monstrous enemies.

Such a good thriller with a good twist and some heart pounding scenes!

I didn't know what to expect, but this was a really good story, backed by great writing and convincing characters, flawed and broken.

Steve is a famous reporter from Pittsburgh and he's the beaten down reporter you'd expect, full of skeletons and trauma which he tries to hide under alcohol and cigarette smoke. But he's good at finding the truth and that's what he sets out to do when he finds an anonymous parcel outside his apartment's door. What's inside will end up forcing him to confront his demons once and for all!

I have to say that some of the scenes were so well written that I was biting my nails with suspense and shouting at the characters! I also enjoyed some of the most horrific elements of this book as they did add an edge to the story, and they made the pursuit of the truth so much more compelling.
I found the twist at the end great, although it left me wanting for more for some reason, maybe because throughout the book I knew something was coming and my mind's conjectures made it a bigger deal than it was in the end.

All in all, I highly recommend it as you won't be able to stop reading until you get to the bottom of Steve's quest for truth.

Thank you to the author and Partners in Crime for a copy and this is my honest opinion.

A package dropped on a reporter’s doorstep serves as a catalyst to dig into a case more than two decades old.

Yet it is a story that rekindles bad memories for reporter Steve James. The quest to solve the mystery unfolds in Some Kind of Truth, an action-packed thriller by Westley Smith.

In an industry where breaking the news is often more important than having all of the details, Steve is determined to find out what happened to the young girl tortured in the video. All he has to work with is the USB drive and a junior driver’s license of Rebecca Ann Turner.

His search leads him to Rebecca’s hometown, where a conversation with a fellow reporter reveals a pattern of murders with accompanying videos. They team up, looking for clues, only to have the storyline take an unexpected twist overlapping with one of Steve’s own published stories.

Steve’s character wrestles with the past as he turns to alcohol to help him forget his own story of torture. The tension ramps up when the pieces fall into place, delivering an unexpected surprise.

Some Kind of Truth showcases a reporter’s determination to find answers, only to realize that some stories must remain untold. ~ Amy for Novels Alive

SOME KIND OF TRUTH is a dark mystery crime thriller about a reporter on the search for truth. Steve James has gone through his own trauma that is similar to that of the girl on the USB stick he anonymously receives. After receiving the approval of his editor, he goes to small-town USA - Hanover if you want the particulars - to find out just what happened.

This was a good story that had me turning the pages, even as I suspended reality. Steve, and the local journalist helping him, Amy, go around the town and surrounding areas, going into houses, and making discoveries that should have been reported to the police.

There were a few errors that I spotted, just as Lance Corporal Lewis Brenner changing to Lance Corporal Kyle Brenner and Private Lewis Lomax. They weren't enough to spoil my reading but they were noticeable.

Steve was a sympathetic character to begin with, but his constant musings about drink and alcohol became monotonous, even knowing the reasons why he used them as a crutch. He can see things others might miss, although he is not infallible.

A dark and gritty story that I can definitely recommend.

This is the first book I read from author Westley Smith and it most likely won't be my last. This story was captivating and kept me guessing until the very end. I do have to say that some of it was predictable for me, although I was not able to guess the ending in its entirety.

The plot twist at the end was great! This story really takes the "eye for an eye" to heart. I had so many moments of surprise with every twist that unfolded. I recommend for anyone that enjoys a very descriptive book filled with suspense, action, and many twists.

I want to thank Wicked House Publishing for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.

Steve James is now a crime reporter who was once a correspondent in Afghanistan that was tortured and almost executed by the Taliban. Nowadays he investigates mob bosses. But when a strange package with information about a 25 year old cold case is left on his doorstep Steve shifts gears to try to solve the case.

The characters are well-written and developed. Steve James deals with his demons and has some bad habits but he is a good guy that wants to find the truth. This was an excellent read. It was, however, a dark read.

This was a good thriller that managed to get my heart racing! I enjoyed the writing style a lot.m. However, I had two big gripes with the story. The first is this reporter would be destroying evidence and ruining any chance of prosecution with all his meddling. Two, the graphic descriptions of rape and torture of a teenage girl felt a little gratuitous.

It was a good story. The twist was excellent. Not sure why authors need to add their own political beliefs into a story. Leave the politics out of it. It is not needed and was certainly not necessary in this story.

This book will take you to a place of escape from reality! Hard to put down and will leave you wanting more! And I don't mean it's a cliffhanger, I mean this book will have you feeling like it could be a movie! Not what I expected at the end and have now found a new go to author!
