SECONDARY TARGET (The Secrets of Kincaid Book #1) by Angela Carlisle is an action filled gripping Christian romantic suspense set in small-town Kentucky where danger from one of the heroine’s P.I. father’s cold cases come back to threaten all those she loves. This is a well written start to a new series from a debut author.

Corina Roberts has built a new life with her father in a small Kentucky town. Strange things begin to happen that are increasingly threatening and she also discovers her father has been keeping secrets from her. With her father in the hospital, she turns to her Army veteran ex-boyfriend to assist her in discovering who is after her.

Bryce Jessup returned to his hometown hoping to stay out of his ex’s way, but when Corina is threatened, he is not willing to leave her unprotected. Corina and Bryce must untangle the mystery behind a ruthless killer from her father’s past before he eliminates everyone she loves, including her.

I really enjoyed these characters and the main suspense plot. Corina and Bryce both had communication issues after a tragic accident that ended their relationship, but they slowly resolve these problems even as they are dodging a killer. Corina is also dealing with her father keeping secrets from her, and her loss of faith after the two horrible tragedies in her life. While Corina and Bryce both have moments of prayer and discussions of faith, it did not disrupt the pace of the suspense plot. This is a Christian romantic suspense so there are no sex scenes in this second chance romance. I enjoyed both the well-developed characters and the well-paced romantic suspense plot.

I recommend this exciting Christian romantic suspense and I am looking forward to the next book in this series from this new author.

An epic debut romantic suspense novel!

Bryce and Corina were both sympathetic, well-developed characters. Their backstories and the way they reacted to them gave them depth. Most romantic suspense books have one or both characters involved in law enforcement, but Secondary Target took a different route that I quite enjoyed for a change. Bryce (even though he was former military) and Corina were just "normal" people caught up in crazy events. I enjoyed Bryce and Corina's second-chance romance and am excited to get to read Allye's story next year.

The plot moved along quickly with plenty of moments of suspense, danger, and high stakes. Poor Bryce and Corina experienced a lot of problems. I appreciated that Angela Carlisle kept both the language and romance clean, and I liked her clear, fast-paced writing style.

Overall, I found Secondary Target to be an exciting read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and romantic suspense novels. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

From the opening scene, I was hooked and wanted to know what was happening. Then I needed to who the villain was. I was fully invested in figuring out what secrets were being kept from Corina, if her dad would be okay and could they figure it out in time. I appreciated how the Bryce and Allie put their lives at risk and on hold to be there for Corina. This villain was evil and quite talented at getting past the defenses. Quite a few people are seriously injured or killed. I do not normally enjoy second chance romances, but these characters captured me quickly and had me rooting for them to get back together. A tragedy in the past separated them, but being reunited got them to discuss their reactions to what happened and figure out how to move forward. This tragedy affected their faith in different ways and I appreciated how they discussed the past and their faith. It felt natural and flowed well. It was refreshing to read a suspense book where neither of the main characters are in law enforcement themselves, but rather stuck in this dangerous situation and work with the police for assistance. The ending reveal shocked me just as much as Corina felt shocked. I am looking forward to the next book in the series as the preview included in this one let me know that we've already met the main characters.

Good romantic suspense debut!

Set in Kentucky with events stemming from a cold case, there is plenty of action in the pages as Corina tries to stay alive and protect those around her. The reveal of the villain and the reasons behind the crimes were well done.

Love the cover and title. Look forward to the next in the series.

My gratitude to the author and publisher (Bethany House) for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Wow! This is a fantastic debut suspense novel.
Corina has been living with her dad while repairs are being done to her house. Then strange things bein to happen. Her dad, Will, is secretive about their past and why her mom and brother were murdered years ago. Old boyfriend, Bryce, and his sister Allye who is her best friend are there to help her. Corina is a determined and independent lady who tries her hardest to figure out who wants to kill her and wonders why God is silent.
So many surprises and twists to the story. And the author has penned a crafty, ruthless, and obstinate bad guy. But justice prevails and Corina learns to trust in God again, thanks to supportive Bryce who prays for her.
I am sure more exciting things are in store in the next book where we learn more about Allye.
Do not miss this well crafted start to a new series by Angela Carlisle.

Sleep? What sleep? I pulled up this file to try a chapter or two at 11:30 pm and turned out the lights at 2:30 am on a Monday morning! I literally couldn’t put it down until I couldn’t see the screen anymore!

Carina doesn’t even know her dad has her carefully shielded from their past. When he realized he couldn’t solve the murders of her mother and brother, he put her in his truck and they vanished. She was just a child back then and life has been peaceful in their new Kentucky home—until now. She’s followed her dreams and opened her own business despite having moved past so much personal loss, including her boyfriend’s kid brother, whose death drove the two of them apart. But Brady’s just left the military now, and it looks like he’s going to be her only hope to catch the diabolical stalker who’s after her now.

I loved the super-twisty mystery angle and the clues Carina and Brady try to assemble together as they attempt to figure out who’s after them before he switches to a kill game. As a veteran mystery reader, I counted only two clues that pointed directly to the real killer, with everything else being clear only in retrospect. It was so tense watching the stalker toy with them while he waged his campaign of terror, especially when he started killing people close to them. Eek!

I really can’t wait for the second book, as I liked both of those characters in this one.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.

Wowzers, what a fantastic romantic suspense debut from an author to watch! I’ve been following this author on social media for years and was beyond excited when she announced the release of her first book! I was drawn into this story on page one and it held me captivated until I reached the end! This author knows how to pen a gripping story that will keep the reader up past their bedtime because they need to know what happens!
I love a small town setting, particularly in a suspense book. Something about a cozy small town where everyone knows and cares about each other juxtaposed with the suspenseful threat of a killer on the loose, always grabs my attention and immediately engages me in the story! I loved my first visit to Kincaid, Kentucky and cannot wait to return in book two of this series!
The suspense in this book was splendidly written, and I loved this author’s voice and the unique and original twists she brought to the suspense genre! I did guess the villain correctly which absolutely thrilled my inner armchair detective!
I also absolutely loved the faith story in this book. It’s beautifully written, and so relatable! God definitely spoke to my heart through this story, and though, thank the Lord I have not personally experienced any of the same things Corina did, her journey encouraged me in my own walk with Jesus!
Second chance romance is one of my favorite tropes and Corina and Bryce’s story was so sweet and it was a joy to watch their love slowly rekindle. I would have loved a few more kisses between them, but that’s just personal preference, and did not impact my overall enjoyment of this story!
I absolutely loved Secondary Target and most highly recommend it! Romantic suspense readers will devour this one and rush to pre-order book two as soon it’s up!
Angela Carlisle is a sensational addition to the Christian romantic suspense genre and I cannot wait to read her next book!
Make sure to add Secondary Target to your TBR. This is one book you do not wanna miss!

This is Angela Carlisle debut novel and honestly I couldn't believe it. She writes like a seasoned author! I was captivated right from the start. This story centers around Corina whose past comes to haunt her in the present. This forces her to rekindle her relationship with hunky Bryce Jessup who is an Army veteran.

This story is all about uncovering secrets and being forgiven for past mistakes. Corina's past is hard. Her family was murdered for what seems no apparent reason. Her dad has kept this from her and when she finds out she is left with lots of questions but no answers especially when someone comes after her. Personally she is also struggling with guilt regarding Bryce's younger brother.

The story is full of action and some twists and turns. The characters were well developed but I did struggle a bit with the romantic aspect between Corina and Bryce. At times it felt like their chemistry truly didn't spark. Maybe we will get a better connection with them in the next book. The mystery aspect was very well done and I didn't have a clue who it was until it was revealed so to me that makes for a great story. Elements of faith were throughout the storyline which I definitely appreciated.

Overall I thought it was a good book and can't wait to read more from this author. If you enjoy Lynette Eason or Lynette Blackburn you will enjoy this author as well!

After the murder of her brother and mother twelve years ago, Corina Roberts made a new home in Kentucky. Strange things begin to happen and she’s pushed into a dangerous game of life and death. She has nowhere else to go and her best hope at surviving depends on her ex, Army veteran Bryce Jessup. Bryce recently returned home from service and vowed to stay away from Corina but when she’s threatened he isn’t willing to put her safety at risk. They search for answers and uncover lethal secrets that Corina’s detective father kept hidden from her. Bryce and Corina must work together to untangle the mystery of a ruthless killer whose intentions are to wipe out Corina’s family.
A solid debut novel. Corina has built a life in Kentucky despite tragic circumstances. Odd things begin to happen and Corina is plunged head first into a mystery surrounding her past that she knew nothing about. Corina’s father has been keeping secrets, deadly secrets that put Corina in the crosshairs of a merciless killer bent on revenge. The last person Corina expected to seek help from is her ex, Bryce but now they’re working side by side to sort out the clues and stay alive. Suspenseful with high stakes action scenes Corina fights for survival with Bryce alongside ready to protect her. This enjoyable story has a well laid plot and intricate storyline. The characters are likable and developed with depth showing real emotion. There’s a faith element at play as Corina struggles to come to terms with the past and trust God. The second chance romance was nicely done as the relationship develops with each chapter. The author kept me guessing and on my toes as the events unfolded.

You know, I've never really wondered before how authors can sleep after researching for, and writing, certain books (well, I HAVE wondered about Jaime Jo Wright. But doesn't everyone?). But I have to ask: Angela Carlisle, HOW did/do you sleep? You HAVE to be having nightmares from the research you must have done.

I'm not trying to scare anyone away from this book-it's a FABULOUS book, but it is DEFINITELY a thrill ride! Whew! I'm just glad my husband's been here while I read it!

If you're looking for a Christian thriller from a debut author that will keep your heart pounding, look no further.

Now. Where do I preorder the next one???

I’m always intrigued with a romantic suspense. This one definitely leans to the suspense side and not a whole lot to the romance side.

I thought this book was well written and once I hit a few chapters I knew that I wouldn’t be putting it down until I knew how it ended.

This book is not for the faint of heart. I’m not sure what so expected with a serial killer stalker, but it was more intense than I imagined it would be.

This would be a great book for those who love true crime and books filled with murderous suspense and mystery.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Content: murder, stalking, serial killer, revenge, baited attacks, drugged attacks, and minimal romance.

BOOK REVIEW - Secondary Target - Angela Carlisle - 4/5 Stars

THE STORY
I'm happy to share a new author with you today, Angela Carlisle! Now I love suspense stories however I always feel a bit bad for the MCs because of everything they have to go through. Angela Carlisle takes this to a whole new level, poor Corina! That girl's entire life gets turned upside down by her stalker! I liked that I was as much in the dark as to who the killer was as the MCs and didn't find out until they did. It was like reading Criminal Minds or some other crime show. Corina is such a strong character but I liked how she still recognized her need for help, not that Bryce would've taken no for an answer, he had all those delicious protective vibes!

THE ROMANCE
This was one of those books that has a lot of romantic thoughts but not many romantic moments. In books, there's always a fine line between realistic and fiction, realistically romance under those circumstances is not the right time but fictionally it's what romance readers like me want. So I respected the author's more realistic take but personally would've preferred more romance, especially as second chance is one of my favourites!

THE TRUTHS
As much as we hate trouble, it is what tests our faith. When trouble cones, do we lean closer to God and trust in His strength and goodness? Or do we turn away and doubt His presence and promises? It's easy to trust God when things are good but it's when things are bad that we really need Him and have to really trust Him. We have to choose to believe in His goodness and presence despite what we see around us and trust in His promises, that He is in control.

A page-turner story that got me nervous and jittery while reading it.

I thought it was a pretty good debut, though I thought the protagonists were underdogs for most of the book and didn't seem to be actively doing anything against the very serious murder threats.

I appreciate Corina's friends Bryce and Allye for literally putting themselves in danger just so she won't be alone. I love that we get multiple POVs (even with a disturbing one from the stalker/killer) because we get to see the situation from different angles.

As an anxious person, I don't think suspense/thriller novels are for me 🫣 But I appreciate the faith elements in this story, truly, God is always in control even though we might not always feel Him moving.

I received a complementary copy from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion.

"Secondary Target" by Angela Carlisle introduces readers to a world filled with danger and a hint of romance. As a debut novel in the Christian romantic suspense genre, Carlisle offers a story that ambitiously aims to blend the thrilling pursuit of a serial killer with the tender reconciliation of lost loves. The narrative centers around Corina Roberts, whose tragic past collides with her present, forcing her into an uneasy alliance with Bryce Jessup, her army veteran ex-boyfriend.

While the premise promises excitement and the protective father element adds depth, the novel struggles to maintain a gripping sense of tension. The chemistry between Corina and Bryce feels underdeveloped, leaving their relationship lacking the spark typically found in second-chance romances. Despite these drawbacks, Carlisle's work is a commendable effort for a new voice in the genre. Her exploration of themes such as courage in the face of fear and the quest for truth amidst a web of secrets may appeal to readers eager to support emerging authors. "Secondary Target" is recommended for those interested in discovering fresh talent and who appreciate stories of resilience.

Although Secondary Target is Angela Carlisle's debut novel it definitely reads like she is and established author. The plot flows smoothly but sucks you in with plot twists and edge of your seat suspense. I love Corina and Bryce with Houston an added bonus. Ms. Carlisle paints the settings with her words the way an artist paints a picture. Her writing style reminds me of Lynn Blackburn or Lynette Eason. I will admit that I did guess the identity of the bad guy before the end of the book and was delighted to find I was right. I look forward to reading more of Angela Carlisle's books.

So curl up in a cozy reading chair and settle in for a great read!

Secondary Target by Angela Carlisle drew me in with the promise of an intriguing plot and a possible serial killer! Say less! This was my first read from this author so I went into this book open minded. I liked the overall concept of this story, but the pacing felt a little slow and it seemed to lack intensity. Moments that I anticipated having me on the edge of my seat felt a bit lacking. I struggled a bit with the fact that the father was hiding so much from his daughter that she was rifling through file drawers in her own home to find out what he was hiding. She was an adult and it seemed odd that the father wouldn’t prepare her for potential threats based on past events. The killer had the upper hand for the entire book and it just became such a source of irritation for me. I wasn’t attached to any of the characters. Corina was difficult to like, and didn’t seem at all grateful for her friends basically putting their lives on hold 24/7 to keep her safe. The romance was basically non-existent and when it did spark at close to 80% of the book, it was really out of no where. Sadly this was not the book for me, however someone else may really enjoy this story.

Ms. Carlisle’s debut romantic suspense novel kicks off The Secrets of Kincaid series. The fast-paced, action-packed plot pulled me in from the beginning and kept me engaged and guessing all the way to the surprising ending. Suspense runs high in Kincaid, Kentucky, as an unknown, unstable, and seemingly unstoppable assailant’s taunting turns to murder in his quest for revenge. The characters, main and secondary, are engaging and realistic. I love how Corina and Bryce’s second chance love story develops amid all the danger and mayhem. I appreciate the meaningful faith thread woven throughout the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Secondary Target by Angela Carlisle is a first time author. She wrote in a romantic suspense genre. While the climactic moment and the revealing of the stalker has a nice twist to it, the rest of the plot was pretty predictable and formulaic. The characters gave a nod to previous romantic suspense heroines and heroes especially when they have a past and are going to work through the pain of the past and try to move forward with helping each other. Of course, I love a romantic suspense novel which features plenty of moments of running from their lives whether it being bullets flying or cars chasing and hitting the heroine or hero. Unfortunately, in this novel, both of these elements happened over and over again. Totally predictable. I believe Carlisle might become a better suspense writer. Her villain was nicely covered throughout the story. She gave him pronouns instead of saying who the villain is. She did a wonderful job at diving into the characters' emotions and thoughts. I just wish, personally, that the story was unique, and not formulaic.

SECONDARY TARGET by Angela Carlisle is the first book in The Secrets of Kincaid series. It’s the fabulously written story of Corina Roberts and Bryce Jessup as they try to unravel the past, stay alive in the present and have a glimmer of hope for a future in Kincaid, Kentucky.

Corina’s life hasn’t been a smooth one, but one filled with loss and heartbreak. Her mother and 7-year-old brother were brutally murdered when she was only 13. Then a tragic car accident left her badly injured and killed her boyfriend’s younger brother, who would have been about the same age her brother would have been. The stress of the accident, with both Corina and Bryce feeling responsible, had their relationship dissolving instead of moving to the next step. Bryce left on a military assignment and Corina tried to put the pieces of her life back to some normalcy. Part of that was become the proprietor of Western Outfitter and having Houston, her German Sheppard, as her constant companion. The one thing she’s not been able to put back to “normal” was her once strong faith. She now doubts God hears her prayers and rarely attends church.

When Corina pulled away from him after his brother’s death, instead of leaving the Army, he signed up again. Now five years later, after seeing more than he cared to and having made a sort of peace with himself, he’s returned home – to stay this time. His plans were to stay away from Corina, but those plans are soon squashed. First, he finds out she’s now living with her father directly across from where he’s moved in. With threats to her home and then attempts on her life, it causes the desire and great need to protect her himself – not willing to depend wholly on the police force.

With the attempts getting bolder, including the shooting at her business, and after the disappearance of her father and knowing he had been keeping secrets, Corina started searching for answers. The best place she knew to look was his office. But where? With the help of Bryce and Allye, Bryce’s sister and her best friend, their search led to the discover of a very well-hidden box full of lethal secrets her once detective father had hidden. Secrets that changed everything Corina thought she knew and one’s that made events in her life to start to make sense. Now to figure out how these secrets relate to all the recent events and who is responsible for them.

Can Corina and Bryce figure out the who, what, when, where and why to these puzzling and dangerous events before it’s too late? Who would be so intent on destroying and killing Corina? What happened in the past to cause what’s happening now? When will the next attempt show up and can they sidestep, defuse or eliminate it before it succeeds in its mission? Where is her father? He’s never been gone like this before or not answer his phone? Has he been another victim in this long list of murders? Why terrorizing and try to eliminate Corina's family now some 12 years later? Will Bryce’s military training help him in protecting Corina? How many attempts and multiply injures can Corina withstand before her body and mind fail her? Can the one police officer her father had trusted with the knowledge of the past be able to help since he knows the gravity of the situation? Will Corina finally realize that it is with the restoration of her faith that will give her strength to finish her mission and give her peace? Is it possible for the relationship of Bryce and Corina to go past friendship again – not the same but different and stronger?

SECONDARY TARGET is an exceptional romantic suspense story that will grab you on page one and take you on one amazing ride of adventure, danger and second chances. Angela Carlisle weaves a delicate thread of faith through the story letting her readers know that through God all things are possible with Him by your side and in His timing. The story has many dangers thrown at the characters and many curve balls in the store that will keep you guess who the culprit is to the very last. Oh, what an amazing story SECONDARY TARGET is! It gets my FIVE STARS and I highly recommend it to anyone that loves a clean Christian fiction, a page-turning romantic suspense novel or just an out and out great story.

I receive an ARC of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.

I absolutely loved Angela Carlisle's debut novel, Secondary Target. What an awesome Christian Romantic Suspense. This story gripped me from the first page and would not let go. I didn't want to have to set it aside to get stuff done, and when I did set it down it took me a while to get my mind to focus on "real" life, because I was so invested in Corina and Bryce's story.
This story is told mainly from the points of view of Corina Roberts and Bryce Jessup. Corina has been living in Kentucky since her father moved them there after the tragic murder of her mother and brother. She is now the owner of an outdoor outfitters shop. At the start of the story she is staying at her overprotective, somewhat paranoid dad's place where there is lots of security. Yet even with all these precautions weird, suspenseful, dangerous events start to take place.
Though we don't know much about her and Bryce's previous relationship when the book starts, it is clear that they used to be close, but are now avoiding each other. However, these events have brought them back together, not that Corina is happy about that. But he and his sister Allye, Corina's best friend, are determined to help keep Corina safe though the threatening events taking place.
As the story progresses we learn more about their past, both the tragedy that took Corina's mother and brother from her, and the past relationship between Corina and Bryce, and what drove them apart. We also see how Corina's faith has been faltering due to all these events.
The suspense ratches up as we start to see small snippets though the eyes of the person threatening Corina. As he gets closer and closer to her we see what danger she truly is in.
The reader has to wonder if they will figure out who is after her and why in time to prevent the unthinkable.
I absolutely LOVED this book. The suspense. The mystery. The second chance love story. The faith journey. All those things were woven together wonderfully by this debut author. I can't wait to read the next story in this series. And even though this is a series, this story was perfectly wrapped up and there are no cliff hangers, which I appreciated.
I received an ARC of this book as a member of the launch team and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.

I received this book as a gift.
There is quite a lot going on in this tale. Wait until you meet Carina. She is a very strong young woman, having to deal with the grief of losing her mom and brother, her dad up and moving her from their home to Kincaid, a small town near Chicago. Fast forward twelve years.

In Kincaid, Carina and her dad thought things had settled down, though Carina still struggled with all the grief that had built up over the years and still had questions – the big one being: Why? Strange things begin to happen. A new neighbor. Bryce returns to town, unbeknownst to Carina, and his sister, Allye (also Carina’s best friend) says nothing. Carina also has a dog, Houston, and her own business. More strange things happen.

Allye – We all need a colorful best friend like Allye. Wait until you read the description of how colorful she is, not just in personality, but her clothes choices. You’ll see.
Bryce – He’s the kind of guy who just wants to protect Carina because his feelings for her never truly disintegrated.
Will – Carina’s dad. A PI by trade. Wait until you read about the mess he got involved with.

I like that Carina is a strong young lady, but she also struggles with her faith, which makes her relatable. I like that she is dealing with all these “normal” things that we deal with on a day-to-day basis, which makes her even more relatable. Bryce isn’t a character who shies away from his feelings for Carina, he went into protector mode, and held onto his own faith. And Allye, she’s a good sister and a good friend. I also enjoyed that there was a bit of darkness to this tale with the bad guy. I have to say I sure didn’t see that one happening. By the end of this tale, I was pretty invested in these characters, and it appears that there is more to their story. It will be interesting to see where this tale goes.

"Goosebumps prickled her arms. . . . . she'd periodically felt unsettled, like someone was watching her. Nothing tangible was ever out of place . . . . . so she'd begun to chalk it up to her imagination."

Corina Roberts certainly wasn't imagining the large vehicle rushing up behind her, increasing its speed until "she heard a sickening crunch, and her head smacked the radio as she was thrown forward . . . . " What in the world? . . . especially after overhearing an odd conversation the next morning between her father and one of the responding officers.

Bryce Jessup's recent return to Kincaid, Kentucky had not prepared him to see Corina up close and personal again so soon . . . as in living right across the street. His sister Allye, Corina's best friend, had omitted that little detail. She was still as beautiful as ever, even considering the aura of sadness that permeated her expressions . . . Corina had lost so much . . . they had all lost so much. That was then, this was now, and despite their painful past, and even if she wouldn't admit it, Corina needed him. Things were about to get pretty dicey, and even that was an understatement; Corina was a living, breathing target.

"But I do know, positively, that God has not left us - no matter how it looks or how we feel."

What an impressive debut! With a diabolical villain who slinks in and out of every corner of Corina's well-ordered life, trying to figure out the next move is nearly impossible with continually evasive clues, violent attacks ratcheting up in intensity, and no place to hide. Fans of fast-paced (light) romantic suspense will love this story!

I received a copy of this novel from the author and publisher. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.

This book is a page-turner. You cannot tell Carlisle is a debut author. She writes like a seasoned pro. The action almost never slows, and the danger constantly ratchets up another notch. I read it in one afternoon. And I hate romance novels(this is mystery/romance but close enough).

Secondary Target is set in a small (fictional?) Kentucky town and it has the small town feel. Everyone knows everyone, and they seem to look out for each other. The book has dual perspectives (with anonymous villain interludes on occasion). The two leads are Corina and Bryce. Five years ago, they had been close to engagement. Then a tragedy drove them apart. They had not seen or spoken to one another until the night the story begins.

Corina falls into the strong independent small-town girl. Or at least she tries. Due to tragedy (and some secrets her father has), she's isolated herself from the world, only retaining a few relationships. She lives with her widower father and a large protective dog. She's a small business owner and fiercely devoted to her father.

Bryce is ex-military. He did a tour and saw action after the break-up. He's moved back home to work at the local auto store. His sister is Corina's closest friend and an incorrigible matchmaker. When Corina's dog is grazed with a gunshot the night he moves into his new house (conveniently a few doors from her father's house), old protective instincts are stirred up. When Corina's father goes missing, and she becomes the target of a murderous stalker, he becomes her self-appointed bodyguard.
As the stakes keep rising, Bryce and Corina get pushed closer and closer together...and right into the crosshairs of a killer who will stop at nothing to avenge himself on Corina and her father.

I was blown away by Secondary Target, one of the best debut novels I’ve ever read.

The backstory for Corina and Bryce gave extra depth to the overall flow of the relationship between them and strengthened the emotion behind their interactions. I couldn’t help rooting for a second chance in the midst of all the trouble they faced as Bryce helped Corina escape the plans of a demented and organized killer.

With her father in the hospital and threats against her escalating Corina has two choices; face things on her own, or trust her friend Allye and her brother Bryce-her ex boyfriend-to help her figure out what’s going on, and stay one step ahead of the person who’s threatening her. Easy choice, right?

As Bryce spends more time with Corina he is determined not to let the past determine the future of their relationship. His first priority must be keeping her safe but somewhere the lines are blurred and his emotions could get in the way. How can he focus on keeping her out of the hands of the person threatening her when she’s right in front of him stirring up feelings he thought he’d put aside?

The book is a testament to great writing, fleshed out characters, and suspense that is perfectly paced to draw the reader in and keep them there long into the night. I loved it.

I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Bethany House through Interviews & Reviews. This is my honest opinion of the book.

MY THOUGHTS

SECONDARY TARGET by Angela Carlisle is the first book in The Secrets of Kincaid series. In this series we meet Corina. She has not had a smooth life. She lost her mother and 7 year old brother to a brutal murder. She also was involved in a car accident that left her injured and her ex boyfriends younger brother dead. She has built a new life for herself in Kentucky. Life is peaceful.

Until she starts to receive threats. Suddenly she finds her ex boyfriend, Bryce back in her life. He has just returned home from the military. The last thing he wants to do is see Corina. They both carry hurt and baggage from their past around with them.

Together they start to find out that Corona's father has some deep dark secrets. She starts to wonder about her mother and brother's cold case. Her dad becomes more and more secretive and it becomes clear that Corina is now a target. Can they figure out who is behind this before it's too late?

The author has crafted a well written suspense filled story. The plot moves at a comfortable pace, and you will find yourself turning pages quickly to find out what happens next. The characters are realistic. This book will draw you in within the first few pages. This is a MUST READ debut novel.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Partners in Crime Book Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you Angela Carlisle and Partners In Crime Tours. I'm excited to be a part of this tour.

Secondary Target is the first in The Secrets of Kincaid series. After the brutal murder of her mother and brother twelve years ago, Corina Roberts built a new life in Kentucky. When strange things begin to happen, she is thrust into a perilous game of life and death. With nowhere else to turn, her best hope of survival depends on her ex-boyfriend, army veteran Bryce Jessup.

Having recently returned from deployment, Bryce has every intention of staying away from Corina, but when threats close in around her, he isn’t willing to leave her safety to chance. As their search for answers uncovers lethal secrets her detective father kept hidden. Bryce and Corina must untangle the mystery before it’s too late.

I loved this debut novel! Thrillers are my absolute favorite, and this book did not disappoint. The author did a great job of developing both main characters and I loved getting to know them. I also appreciated the dual POV. It helped me understand where they came from, and I empathized with them multiple times throughout the book.

I was engaged from start to finish and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I love the world building; it helped me feel like I was a fly on the wall. I look forward to reading more in this series and seeing how the characters evolve.

This was a surprise hit for me! I loved the way this romantic suspense played out!

Corina Roberts has been making a life for herself in Kentucky after a rough past. Her mother and brother were killed twelve years ago and now strange things are happening to bring up the past. One of the things she doesn’t want to do is reconnect with her ex, who just happens to show up and be the one person there when she needs him most. Bryce has returned from service and uses his military skills to help keep Corina Safe.

This is a new author that is being flung deep into the sea along with many other romantic suspense authors. It is a hard thing to do, enter a market already deep with the same thing. I was skeptical about going for this one and give it my time, but it did surprise me with the way it hooked me and kept me engaged with the characters. I really felt connected with Corina and wanted to see her come out of a bad situation safe and happy. The love connection was a secondary target, pun intended, for me with this story. There was plenty of tension, romance, suspense and all the right moments to keep me turning the pages. I’m hoping to see more from this author and if so, I will be happy to pick them up and be a happy reader. I recommend this book to those that enjoy great romantic suspense with even better characters.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.
